take something at face value = believe the appearances of something

When your girlfriend answers “nothing” to the question “what’s wrong?”, it’s better not to take that answer at face value.

think of sb as X (often used with “one”)

The company United Airlines is now thought of as a greedy and shady one (by many people).

Many people think of UA as a shady company.

You are the best by far = You are #1 –> Number 2 is far behind

You are one of the best by far = You are one of the best = You are #1, 2 , 3 or 4 = Number 5 is far behind.

escalate = worsen (situation, problem)

The tension between two people never goes from 0 to 100 in a flash. It escalates slowly.

Sometimes it is important to have a straightforward and honest conversation with people to de-escalate.
