literal vs figurative

safety net = a net that prevents an acrobat from falling to the ground (literal – an actual, real net)

safety net = savings, a plan B, something to rely on in case things go wrong (figurative – there is no actual, real net)

to come up for air = to come to the surface of the water to breathe (literal)

to come up for air = to take a break from an activity, usually demanding

we are going to have three days off

it was felt in Shanghai (about an earthquake)

epicenter = the place on the ground exactly above the place underground that an earthquake takes place

visible to the naked eye = can be seen without having to use binoculars or a telescope
