Vocabulary

Commitment (n): 1- a willingness to give your time and energy to something that you believe in, or a promise or firm decision to do something.
E.g.: Players must make a commitment to play for a full season.

Interpretation (n): 1-   an explanation or opinion of what something means
E.g.: The article allowed different interpretations.

Trial (n): 1- the hearing of statements and showing of objects, etc. in a law court to judge if a person is guilty of a crime or to decide a case or a legal matter.
E.g.: She’s going on trial for fraud.

Resist (v): 1- to fight against something or someone that is attacking you. 2- to refuse to accept or be changed by something.
E.g.: The soldiers resisted the enemy attacks for two days.
E.g.: The party leader resisted demands for his resignation.

Congress (n): 1- the elected group of politicians who are responsible for making the law.
E.g.: Congress has rejected the recent presidential proposal on gun control.

Protest (n): 1- a strong complaint expressing disagreement, disapproval, or opposition. 2- an occasion when people show that they disagree with something by standing somewhere, shouting, carrying signs, etc.. (= demonstration)
E.g.:  The German team made a formal protest against their disqualification from the championship.
E.g.:  Last Wednesdays there was a huge protest against the war.

Demonstration (n): 1- the act of showing someone how to do something, or how something works. 2- an occasion when a group of people march or stand together to show that they disagree with or support something or someone.
E.g.: Let me give you a demonstration of how the camera works.
E.g.: The students are holding a demonstration against the proposed changes.

Neglect (v): 1- to not give enough care or attention to people or things that are your responsibility.
E.g.: He neglects that poor dog – he never takes him for walks or gives him any attention.

Legislative (adj): 1- relating to laws or the making of laws:
E.g.: The European Parliament will have greater legislative powers (= ability to make laws).

Poll (n): 1- a study in which people are asked for their opinions about a subject or person.
E.g.: We’re conducting a poll to find out what people think about abortion.

Legitimate (adj): 1- allowed by law. 2- reasonable and acceptable. (≠ illegitimate)
E.g.: The army must give power back to the legitimate government.
