Vocabulary

Euphemize – to make something sound better than it truly is

Euphemism – a phrase that softens the meaning of an uncomfortable topic

Ex. A popular euphemism is the phrase “passed away,” which replaces “die.”

Ex. In America, when children have to use the restroom and are uncomfortable saying the words “pee” and “poop,” they opt to use the euphemisms “number one” and “number two.” For example, a child may say “mommy, I have to go number two.”

The difference between help and the help. The word “help” simply means assistance, but the phrase “the help” refers to people who are hired to help you daily, such as maids, servants, and butlers. In contemporary English, the phrase “the help” is viewed negatively as a euphemism for people who are wastefully rich.
