Look at your last writing about Friends, try to use some of the upgraded vocabulary from this lesson in your writing.

Review

firecrackers (n) – 鞭炮 – small cigarette shaped objects that create a loud noise when set on fire. Usually used during Chinese New Year celebration

fireworks (n) – 烟花 –  an object which when set on fire, shoots up into the sky and explodes, creating intricate and beautiful designs and shapes

e.g. Chinese kids really like to play with firecrackers, however, older people really like setting off fireworks.

eg. We will set off firecrackers before Chinese New Year’s Eve and we will set off fireworks CNY’s midnight.

beef (n) –  meat that comes from cows

eg. Somebody likes to eat beef.

lamb (n) – meat that comes from lamb ( young sheep)

mutton (n) – meat that comes from adult sheep

eg. Usually Chinese people like to eat lamb and mutton in the winter.

Corrections

Last night I watched one episode of Friends. It was about the New Year’s Eve party/celebration. The six friends made a pact that they wouldn’t bring their boyfriends and girlfriends at to the party and would just had have a dinner together ( all by themselves.)

During the episode, Ross got a monkey, Marcel, from his colleague. Phoebe met one a scientist, David when she was singing in Central Perk Cafe and they started dating later. As the New Year‘s Eve was coming, and the six friends began to prepare (things) for the partythings at Monica’s apartment. During their talking conversation, some of them mentioned they knew they might not keep their pact . Rachel told them her boyfriend went out of town but would try to come back to celebrate New Year with her. Monica, Phoebe, Chandler and Joey would also bring somebody to the party.

At the day of the party, Then each of them forgot the pact and brought his or her friend to the party. But Ross came with Marcel, and hehated it was unhappy because everyone broke their pact. Phoebe split up with her boyfriend as he was going to Minsk. Rachel’s boyfriend missed the plane and she felt bad for it him.

As the countdown to New Year started, they forgot all their troubles but and just enjoyed the festival at that moment.

dating = going out

prepare = get ready

spend time together = hang out 

might not keep their pact = go back on your word

eg. If you make a promise we can also call it “your word”. If you do not keep it, you go back on your word, you just didn’t keep your promise.

unhappy or angry = pissed off

eg. I’m pissed off that my friends cancelled on me.

eg. I’m pissed off because I didn’t book the class.

eg. I’m pissed off because Olivia made a mess in the house after I just cleaned it.

big deal = when sth is very important

eg. When Monica was angry during Thanksgiving she thought it was a big deal that no one asked her what she wanted.

eg. Your wedding anniversary is a big deal.

eg. If you forget Olivia’s birthday, I will be pissed off! Her birthday is a big deal!

eg. Taking care of Olivia and spending time with her is a big deal for me!
