Vocabulary

cool – 凉

double eyelid – 双眼皮

e.g. There’s such a thing as tape that you put on your eyelid so then you get double eyelids.

to pop out – fall out

e.g. My contact lens popped out of my eye the other day while I was in the subway.

Looking at the mirror

contact lenses – 隐形眼镜

e.g. Tanya wears contact lenses because she doesn’t like to wear glasses.

short-sighted – when you can’t see things that are far away very sharply

far-sighted – when you can’t see things that are close by very sharply

e.g. A lot of young people are short-sighted.

lens – something you see through

e.g. Your camera has a lens.

The machine swallowed my card. – 吃了我的卡

figure

  • 1. body -> she has a nice figure
  • 2. numbers – > What are the figures for this year’s company growth?

accent – 口音

e.g. British guys have a nice accent.

pirate – 海盗

e.g. Foreigners in Beijing call the Beijing accent the “pirate” accent, because they always go “arr” (儿).

flirty – 骚,嗲

e.g. I like this boy but he’s talking to this other girl and being very flirty. I’m jealous.

diva – a female singer with a big personality

e.g. Beyonce is a diva

Dutch – 荷兰语

e.g. Tanya speaks Dutch with her dad.

speechless – when someone doesn’t know what to say anymore, shocked

e.g. She insulted me very badly and I was speechless, I didn’t know what to say.

to be lost for words (idiom) – to not know what to say

a heavy question – a loaded question, a question with a lot of pressure.

e.g. In the West we ask people “how are you?” which is a much more heavy question than “吃了吗”, which is what they ask people in China.
