Vocabulary 词汇


Enlarge – to make something bigger

Ex. Zooming into page enlarges the characters on the screen.

Phonetic – based on pronunciation and sound

Ex. Unlike Chinese characters, the Spanish writing system is completely phonetic.

Subcontinent – the southern part of Asia that includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Ex. Many of the ethnicities in the Subcontinent share a common history.

Expressions 成语


To “catch someone off guard” means to intentionally surprise someone when they are not expecting it.

Ex. The storm appeared so quickly that is caught the town off guard.

If something “changes the game” it means that circumstances have changed and the same plan will not work anymore. You can also simply say “that changes things.”

Ex. You speak Spanish? That changes things.

IF someone says “the tables have turned,” it means that someone who was previously on the bad side of a situation is now on the good side of the situation. In other words, the situation has reversed.

Ex. When you ask to get back together, your ex-boyfriend laughs in your face. A few months later, he comes begging back. Oh, how the tables have turned.
