Vocabulary 词汇


Cliché – (adj.) overused, not sincere, (noun) an overused or insincere phrase

Ex. Clichés often make an argument sound weak because they sound so unoriginal.

Racism – the belief that people of other races are inferior to you

Ex. With the election of Donald Trump, racism has become more violent in the United States.

Prejudice – a negative opinion about a group of people that is not based in experience or knowledge

Ex. Prejudice in America has caused a lot of racial tension in the past century.

Xenophobia – fear of difference

Ex. Many xenophobes are scared of both people of other religions and people of other races.

Career – a long-term job, 事业

Ex. Many parents hope their child will pursue an impressive career in the future. (很多父母希望孩子将来会做出一番大事业)

Profession – a person’s job or specialty, 职业. In Chinese, a profession often ends with “家.”

Ex. Many musicians chose their profession because they were passionate about it rather than wanting to earn a lot of money.

Impress – to produce a mark by pressing an object onto something

Ex. After wearing the socks all day, the pattern in the fabric was impressed onto his skin.

Posh – unnecessarily fancy

Ex. That theatre is a really posh; the tickets cost an arm and a leg.

Thesaurus – a dictionary for synonym (and antonyms)

Ex. If you want to find another word with the same meaning, you should look in a thesaurus.

Expressions 成语


The expression “what’s new” is a way of asking someone for an update on how they are and what they’ve been doing. A cliché (insincere) response is “not much, and you?”

To “cost an arm and a leg” means to be too expensive.
