China customs has released a policy recently, which has put strict duty on imported goods. Many people have experienced the most strictest inspections in histroy at the airport. Customs required them to open their luggages and all the carry-on bags. Purchasers were told that they have 2 options, either pay the duty to customs or they will be handed over to police. Usually the duties were relatively high, some were even higher than their purchase prices.
This was definitely a bad news to me. As a mother, I need to buy imported baby formula and other related food products frequently and the increased duty will definitly aggravate my burden. This policy made me think about a lot of things, among which the most important thing was why China customs only chose the method of elevating the duty level to limit imported goods instead of paying attention to enhancing the quality of supply chain of all the domestic products? Has the Chinese government really thought thorough about the root cause of so many people purchasing imported products? From my perspective, relatively lower price is just one reason and the other very important reason is the higher standard of food in developing countries. Increasing the imported duty is a temporary way while enhancing the food quality will be a long-term and sustainable strategy. As the requirements of domestic consumers are growing, government should integrate more resources to elevate quality of domestic food and increase the “value for money”.

Instead, why not focus on enhancing the quality of supply chain of all the domestic products?
