Grammar

Which Vs. That

If the sentence doesnā€™t need the clause that the word in question is connecting, useĀ which. If it does, useĀ that. (Pretty easy to remember, isnā€™t it?) Let me explain with a couple of examples.

  • Our office, which has two lunchrooms, is located in Cincinnati.
  • Our office that has two lunchrooms is located in Cincinnati.

These sentences are not the same. The first sentence tells us that you have just one office, and itā€™s located in Cincinnati. The clauseĀ which has two lunchroomsĀ gives us additional information, but it doesnā€™t change the meaning of the sentence. Remove the clause and the location of our one office would still be clear:Ā Our office is located in Cincinnati.

The second sentence suggests that we have multiple offices, butĀ the office with two lunchroomsĀ is located in Cincinnati. The phraseĀ that has two lunchroomsĀ is known as a restrictive clause because another part of the sentence (our office) depends on it. You canā€™t remove that clause without changing the meaning of the sentence.
End Vs. Finish

We use the verbsĀ endĀ andĀ finishĀ in similar ways, to mean ā€˜come to a stopā€™:

  • I think that his contractĀ endsĀ this month.
  • What time does the filmĀ finish?

We useĀ finishĀ to say that we complete something that we are doing. It emphasises that the process stops within a specific period of time.Ā EndĀ would not normally be used in these examples:

  • HeĀ finishedĀ his meal in just three minutes.
  • If we had the right tools, we couldĀ finishĀ the job by Friday this week.
  • Her brotherĀ finishedĀ last in the race.

We useĀ endĀ to say that stopping something is significant, and has a clear conclusion or shape.Ā FinishĀ wouldnā€™t normally be used in these examples:

  • The course of the riverĀ endedĀ in a delightful harbor with small sailing boats everywhere.
  • Many historians agree that the medieval period in EuropeĀ endedĀ in the mid-sixteenth century.
  • Verbs thatĀ endĀ in -ed are usually in the past tense.

FinishĀ can be followed by the –ingĀ form, but not by aĀ to-infinitive:

  • Theyā€™veĀ finished playingĀ those computer games.
  • Not:Ā Theyā€™ve finished to playĀ ā€¦
  • I havenā€™tĀ finished dryingĀ my hair yet.
  • Not:Ā I havenā€™t finished to dryĀ ā€¦

EndĀ cannot be followed by either aĀ to-infinitive or the –ingĀ form:

  • Call me when youā€™veĀ finished writingĀ the report.
  • Not:Ā Call me when youā€™ve ended writingĀ ā€¦

“You Oughta Know” by Alanis MorissetteĀ

I want you to know, that I’m happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
An older version of me
Is she perverted like me
Would she go down on you in a theatre
Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby
I’m sure she’d make a really excellent mother’cause the love that you gave that we made wasn’t able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you’d hold me
Until you died, till you died
But you’re still aliveAnd I’m here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta knowYou seem very well, things look peaceful
I’m not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
Are you thinking of me when you fuck her?’cause the love that you gave that we made wasn’t able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you’d hold me
Until you died, til you died
But you’re still aliveAnd I’m here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know’cause the joke that you laid on the bed that was me
And I’m not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else’s back
I hope you feel it…well can you feel itWell, I’m here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know
