Series – a group of things in an order

a. A series of accidents occurred this morning to make this road very crowded
a. A big accident (pileup) occurred this morning which caused a lot of traffic.
— When you say something happened “to make” something else happen, it seems to be on purpose, which here is backwards.
— “Which” adds information about what was said before.
e.g. He came to the United States, which was what allowed him to escape debt.
Option a1: A series of accidents occurred this morning which caused a lot of traffic. (Many separate accidents occurred.)

b. There is no ending for this TV show. It will be a series story for the next season, I guess.

— Series always means more than one thing.
Episode – one part of a show, usually lasting from 20 minutes to 1.5 hours.
e.g. The show has 6 seasons, each with 10 episodes. So altogether, it has 60 episodes.

3. What’s different between embarrassed and awkward
Embarrassed is related to someone’s actions
e.g. Chinese people are generally embarrassed by compliments.
e.g. He tripped going onstage and was very embarrassed.
Awkward is a situation which makes you feel embarrassed, or which you feel is weird or tense; a person or behavior that causes these situations. When you don’t know how to react.
e.g. Receiving compliments is awkward for Chinese people.
e.g. I ran into my ex-boyfriend, and it was awkward because we haven’t talked for a while.


Crash – when two things run into one another, or one into the other
e.g. When vehicle crash, we call that “an accident.”

Pile – a lot of things put one on top of another, without any order; a mess
e.g. When my daughter is done playing, she leaves a pile of toys for me to clean up.

Pileup – a large accident involving cars, trucks, etc.
e.g. The pileup on the highway this morning created awful traffic.

Court – a place with judges and lawyers where arguments are decided using the law
