    Writing

In modern society, people tend to care more about celebrities’ appearances or social statuses, instead of focusing on their accomplishment in art, music or performing. This unwanted attention would definitely build a misleading message for the younger generations.

Attraction of famous people has become more related with being good looking and wealthy, and the public is more interested in their personal lives. For example, a reality show called ‘Keeping up with Kardashians’ has gained a huge fan base, as the show was all about exposing the wealthy’s life and showing how glamorous they are. The remarkable success of such television programs demonstrates the audiences’ preferences have changed from the stars’ talent to their wealth. In addition, some big names consider the current trend of the entertainment industry as abnormal too, whereas it contradicts the initial intention of the industry, which is to entertain people with art.

Consequently, there would be negative effects on teenagers. It would be human nature to imitate others, especially when at a younger age. Therefore, such current trends are more likely to be blindly followed by the younger generations. This can also illustrate the reason why there are so many teenagers ‘showing off’ on social media, and posting photoshopped pictures of themselves. Moreover, the sense of vanity introduced by the trend further stimulates the issue of children being misguided by the wrong values.

In conclusion, I definitely believe that the increasing attention on superstars’ personal lives would create inadequate role models for children. Thus, it would be necessary, or even urgent, to deal with the problematic trend.

    Homework:

Some people in the education industry say that the advantage of examinations outweigh its disadvantages. What are your thoughts?

Examinations in education is an incredibly controversial topic in modern society. Some suggest that too many exams would impose greater stress on students, however, some think that the examination is the best way to measure students’ learning and for the teachers to better manage the teaching plans.

In a lot of Asian countries, such as China, Japan and Korea, there are more tests assigned for the students, especially in high school, where the education is regarded more important to achieve a higher results for students to apply for the universities. On the other hand, western countries tend to have less tests assigned, replaced by the assessments and group projects. The significant differences illustrate the vary opinion towards education. The Asian parents have the stereotypes of having too many attention on their children’s test results, which is the main reason why there were couple incidents of students commit suicide due to the higher than expected stress in Asian countries.

Contrary, there definitely are some benefits brought by the exams as well. The exam was designed to assess the ability of learning and knowledge of students, which is a crucial way to know if the students have put efforts in study. In addition, the intention of having exam for university entry is also a way to find the most suitable students for further education in particular courses. Although the stresses come along with the exams, but it is more important to have the incentive for students to be hardworking.

In conclusion, although the tests for students could be unnecessary, but it is still a very important method to assess their knowledge, not only for their parents, but for themselves to know their current problems and set a goal to work on.

    Homework

Go over your essay one more time and fix all the mistakes we fixed together in class.

It is an incredibly controversial topic in modern society that whether the high wages would  leads to a negative consequence to a country. It is true that the wealthier people can further boost the economy, with a higher input of capital, however, some also believes that the income gap between rich and poor could impose a serious problem.

In economy, the rich have greater resources to invest, in terms of purchase house or machines, which is a remarkably incentive to the economy in that country, due to the higher aggregate demand of the merchandise. The higher demand would leads to a multiplier effect, with the theory of ‘one man’s spending would be other man’s income’, and would further stimulate the consumption of the whole, which leads to an economic growth eventually.

On the other hand, the higher the salaries the rich get, the larger the wage gap is. The distribution of equitable income contradict the theory of higher consumption, whereas it might be difficult to solve. Putting upper and lower limit on people’s wages is one of the strategy that governments might imposed, however there would then be no such incentive on consumption, like a higher salaries could bring.

In conclusion, although it would be important to lower the income gap between wealth and poor, the more significant to boost the economy. The government might consider to set a upper limit on employee’s wages when the economy is at the state on expansion, when a lower consumption would not leads to a huge problem for the economy

The line graph illustrates the differences between the populations of different kinds of turtles in India from 1980 to 2012. It is noticeable that the Olive Ridley Turtles have ranked first in regards to its population since around 1987, followed by the Green turtles, which ranked second, and the Leatherback Turtles, which ranked last.

It can be seen that the population size of all turtles in India tended to be stable from 1980 to 2012, with some small fluctuations, which might have been caused by the dramatic decrease of the population of Leatherback Turtles(don’t speculate)[the growth of population of Leatherback Turtles is correlated to the decline of the population of all the other turtles], from approximately 100 to 60 in number, and the continuous increase of Olive Ridley Turtles, from in the neighbourhood of 100 to around 130. The amount of Green Turtles tended to stay at the level of between 100 and 110, which is the most stagnant one among all the categories.

The key feature of the representation is that the population of all kinds of turtles in India was similar to each other from 1980 to 1987, and experienced significant growth and decline after that, respectively.

    Writing

Q:Do you feel that new technology developments – social media, food delivery apps etc. – pose a threat on people’s privacy? What are some examples of this?

In the modern society, the losing privacy is a really controversial topic with the development of the social networks. With the greater exposure of people’s personal details, the threats of losing personal privacy has become a greater problem that people would face.

Firstly, with the development of technology, the social media has became one of the most important addictions. One thing that is related to social media is people tends to post contents whatever they want and have no aware of the dangers imposed. For instance, the teenagers in the modern society are addicted to social networks and also due to the current trend of social media. The younger generations would post more about their daily lives and not concerned about what they are losing.

Secondly, with the improvements of the food industry, people in China are addicted to the food delivery applications in their mobile phones, which is also because of the convenience. One of the dangers of the delivery industry is people’s personal details such as their address and phone numbers can be easily accessed by the strangers. However, The greater problem related to this situation is people have too little awareness towards exposing their personal details.

The easy accessibility of personal details due to the more developed social networks definitely imposed dangers to people especially when they’re not that concerned about it with little acknowledgement of the significance of losing it.

    Edited:

In the modern society, the invasion of privacy is a hugely/immensely/tremendously/incredibly controversial topic, especially/particularly with the development of the social networks. As people’s lives become more convenient/ as people become more reliant on the modern lifestyle, we face a greater threat on our personal privacy. This modern threat is becoming one of the greatest problems of the twenty-first century.

Firstly, with the development of technology, social media has became one of the most severe/wide-spread addictions worldwide. People – especially the younger generation/those in their teens –  tend to post contents whenever they want and have no awareness of the dangers imposed. For instance, strangers or dangerous stalkers/criminals can track someone’s every move on social media via their moments posts. Even though similar accidents have happened/have made the news, we can’t seem to stop; teenagers in the modern society are hopelessly addicted to social networks due to the current trend. The younger generation are posting all about their daily lives and not at all concerned about what they are losing.

Secondly/also/in addition/furthermore, with the boom/exponential increase/outburst of phone apps, people in China are becoming addicted to the food delivery applications on their mobile phones. Unlike that of  Western countries, the delivery service in China is more matureall of the world’s cuisines is just a few clicks away. However, this convenience is not without its drawback. One of the dangers of the delivery industry is that people’s detailed personal information such as their addresses and phone numbers can be easily accessed by the strangers. However, The greater problem related to this situation is that people have too little awareness towards this threat.

The accessibility of personal information brought on by/caused by a more developed social network definitely imposes new dangers to people, especially when they’re not concerned about it or even recognise it.

I ran into a man in which is a tourist attraction in Shanghai and also known for the local snacks and maybe the local just a place for tourists. I went there last weekend and I ran into a guy who is middle aged and talking to someone on the phone. Presumably it was his wife because they were just yelling about some random stuff such as the housework and how their life has been. The man was yelling at maybe his wife. It was not that polite do such things on the street or in the public and I feel the negative energy from people around is arguing with some people and with such a loud noise and just made me uncomfortable. I think he didn’t notice that it will make people around him feel uncomfortable. That’s why I really don’t prefer to hang out with people who do such things.

Presumably it was his wife because they were just yelling about some random stuff such as the housework and how their life has been. The man was probably yelling at his wife. It was not a polite thing to do  on the street or in the public and I always feel the overwhelmingly negative energy from people who argue in public. Should the international community do more to tackle the threat of global warming?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Global warming has became one of the most significant issues human could face in the modern society, due to greater pollution we caused. Governments from the globe have considered to take some actions to protect our one and only homeland.

In my opinion, all citizens in the world should be more aware of the significance of air pollution, and also be more concerned about their daily activities which might cause even more damage to the earth. The problem of greenhouse gas emissions has became worse and worse as time goes, and also due to the growing demand for minerals and trees with accelerating development of the world. Consequently, the threatening pressure of harm to the earth has increased, for example, humans’ food chain would then be damaged due to the higher temperatures.

With that in mind, governments or all interest groups has been thinking of ways to lower the emissions. A lot of countries have implied some listing rules for the factories’ gas emissions, especially for mining industry. For instance, Australia, which is a country that is known for its excellent performance in exported commodity goods, have once denied an proposal of an establishment of an out-door coal mining area, with the concerns of there would be greater emissions, and sooner causing damages towards eco-system, such as the rising sea level.

In conclusion, actions regarding to the global warming would be necessary and even urgent, as it is everyone’s responsibility to protect the earth, and ourselves from danger.

Should the international community do more to tackle the threat of global warming?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

    REMEMBER:
    the / be / +s (verbs)

    Writing

It is a controversial topic among the society that people tends to experience more stress than people used to before. In regard(s) to this question, I personally believe that the younger generations might actually feel more pressure from the public, due to the greater exposure / visibility of people’s personal lives and the improved social network.

It is obvious that the world has changed a lot compared to how / the way it used to be before. With the development of network technology and the greater significance of social media in people’s daily lives, the children in the 21st century would have a lot / many more people ‘around’ them, ‘spying’ on their lives with both positive and negative connotations. Moreover, as people at a younger age tends to have a higher chance to be suffer from vanity, especially with the current trend that exists / as the current trend exists in the social media, which can be simply described by / as purely ‘showing off’ online, and that would leads to a higher / greater peer pressure, and can also be known as the sense of having to keep up with the trends / keep up with the jones’

Compared to the life before the mobile telecommunication developed, people were unlikely to have privacy concerns / issues that easily back then, and they have to even travel a long way to a particular phone booth to make a phone call in the 1980s. Because of the inconveniences and the less / reduced exposure to the ‘grown-up world’, teenagers might have had a freer childhood life, having their special moments with their friends or some memorable adventures in the woods, instead of being distracted by the cellphones. As a result, the stress of having to face the truth and brutality of the world could be eliminated.

All in all, without the pressure from the outside world, no matter whether it is due to the vanity, or due to the too-early exposure to the  (western / modern) society, the people from the earlier century may experience less stress than now.

    redundant: 多余的; 不需要的
ie. Try not to be redundant in your speaking or writing.

    atrocious: 糟透的; 十分讨厌的; 残暴的; 残忍的; 凶恶的;
ie. The public-shaming measures in SH are atrocious.

    blatant: 公然的
ie. Your action is a blatant disrespect of my privacy.

    Grammar

When you’re adding information to the sentence before, use words such as “where, which, who, that…”

    Speaking

Q:How do you like SH? Would you recommend it to a newcomer like me?

A: I like SH because SH for maybe in China, is the most multicultural city. It’s more multicultural and more international and it has a lot of skyscrapers. It’s more welcoming for the newcomers to come because we have different restaurants from all over the world, different cuisines for people to try. We have a district or area, it belongs to the foreigners, especially when you’re walking down the street, it is the Phoenix tree. When you, being able to strolling down the street in Autumn, it feels really relaxing to see the leaves falling down, and experience the warm weather. It’s really relaxing and maybe calm your mind to just stroll down the street and have nothing in your mind.
Edited: I like SH because in China, it’s one the most multicultural cities. It’s more multicultural and more international than other cities. It’s more welcoming for the newcomers because there are different restaurants from all over the world, with/serving different cuisines for people to try. In SH, there is a special/designated area which used to belong to the foreigners, and you can feel a different/Western vibe there. In this particular area we call “Zu Jie”, when you’re walking down the street, you can see the Phoenix trees along the road. Being able to stroll down the street in Autumn is very relaxing; I feel very at ease to see the leaves falling down and to experience the warm weather. You can feel calm easily by just strolling down the street and having nothing on your mind.

Q:Do you think it’s necessary to have “public-shaming” measures in China? Can we sacrifice people’s individual rights to privacy in order to teach them to do the right thing?

A:In my opinion, public-shaming will be better to use in China than Western countries because I think maybe in China, the citizens might not be ashamed by these public-shaming. The govt may impose harsher measures, such as fines. The citizens will be more pissed off. Unlike the Western cultures, the individual rights or privacy are more important. For example, maybe a grandma cross the road, they might just be thinking that I’m not paying the fine, it’s ok, it’s just my picture is up on the wall. People might not recognize me anyway. People in Western countries care more about whether other people have the right to take pictures of others. Maybe for China, we are not grown in that culture, we are not worried about such things. I think this measure imposed can be not necessary but this kind of rules can be taken place because the consequences are not that significant in our mind.

Edited: In my opinion, public-shaming might be better for use in China than use in Western countries because I think in China, the citizens might not actually be ashamed by these public-shaming acts/measures/activities/policies. Instead of these measures/if we didn’t have these measures, the government may impose even harsher measures, such as fines. In that case/then the citizens will be more pissed off/angry. Unlike Western cultures, where the individual rights or privacy of their citizens are more important, Chinese culture doesn’t emphasize these rights as much/focuses on other more realistic/down-to-earth aspects. For example, when a grandma crosses the road, she might just be thinking that “I’m not paying the fine, it’s ok, it’s just my picture is up on the wall. People might not recognize me anyway.” People in Western countries care more about whether other people have the right to take pictures of others. Maybe for Chinese people, because we are not grown in that kind of/Western culture, we are not worried about such things. I think these measures imposed are not necessarily a must but this kind of rules can be imposed because the consequences are not that significant in our mind.

because I went to australia for study so i didnt have much time for traveling that much so the recent trip i went to japan was with my friends and my mum and her mum going with us as well and we went to japan, tokyo, osaka, and in tokyo we went to the famous temple, and there was really local snacks and just be able to meet the local culture and local people and feel the warmness… i dont really like the osaka, i like tokyo because like shanghai it’s more multicultural and more suitable for the foreigners to travel because they have the local culture, and multicultural vibe.
