Vocabulary

Doctor’s Questions:

What seems to be the problem? / What is bothering you today? / What brings you here today? / When was your last (physical / check-up?)

Are you experiencing any…      trouble breathing /shortness of breath / congestion

Is there any blood in your mucus or stool or urine?

Do you have any allergies? Are you allergic to anything, any medications?

I don’t have anything to be allergic.  – I’m not allergic to anything. / I don’t have any allergies.

Do you have a history of any illness? Any hereditary diseases or issues (family history)

Now, take a deep breath. I wanna listen to your (lungs / heart)

And Say Ahhhh! and stick out your tongue.


Hospital Departments:

Maternity Ward – the department for pregnant mothers

eg: They sell maternity clothes in the maternity ward.

E.R. – Emergency Room

I.C.U. / Critical Care – Intensive Care Unit (for people with severe problems, maybe dying)

Pediatric – department for children

Surgery – to cut open the patient

Types of Pain / Discomfort:

numb – no feeling

eg: My foot is numb.

eg: I have no feeling in my left arm.

sharp – imagine a needle

eg: I have a sharp pain in my chest

dull – softer pain over a larger area of your body

eg: I have a dull pain in my lower back, it comes and goes.

throbbing – when you feel a pulse of pain, very strong, then very weak pain

eg: My head is throbbing.

sore – pain from overuse of muscles

eg: My neck is sore, I think I slept on it wrong.

stiff – feels uncomfortable or difficult to move

eg: My shoulder gets stiff in cold weather.

Medical Vocabulary:

Cardio – heart related

eg: I need to do more cardio at the gym.

wheezing – a strange sound and difficulty breathing

eg: After he was running in the bad air for a few months, he started wheezing.

chronic – lasting or permanent problem

eg: I have chronic breathing issues. But they are not diagnosed.

universal – works for everything

eg: There is no universal cure

migraine – a very serious and long headache

eg: I’ve had a terrible migraine for about 12 hours.

encyclopedia – like a dictionary, but with more info, resource for knowledge

eg: We had an encyclopedia set at my home.

wikipedia – an online encyclopedia, created by users

hereditary – an inherited trait, or problem

eg: Hair and eye color is hereditary.

eg: I don’t have any hereditary problems, that I know of.

Fatigue – overall tiredness, tired body and muscles

shallow – opposite of deep

eg: Do you have shallow breathing?

Nausea (N.) – feeling like you are going to throw up / vomit

eg: Are you nauseous? (ADJ)

congestion – when things are blocked, like roads, or your airways for breathing.

eg: My nose is congested. =  My nose is stuffed up.

mucus – a sticky substance, produced by your body, especially when you have a cold, can be green or yellow or clear.    (Snot)

eg: I’m really congested and have a lot of mucus.

urine – pee

eg: Do you have any trouble urinating? (going to the bathroom)

stool – poop

eg: When was your last bowel movement? (your last poop)

Diagnose (V.) – to identify the problem

eg: We could not diagnose the problem, then we found out it was a food allergy. Those allergies are really hard to diagnose because the symptoms are so common.
