VIP Class Notes (Tony)

Next Class Focus

Give writing homework.

Tips for Everyday Class:

  1. Speak more!!!

Ask Questions.   Repeating the teacher’s phrases. Especially from questions.

eg: Where are you from?    I’m from Shanghai.

eg: Do you wanna go to Disneyland this afternoon?

No, I don’t wanna go to Disneyland this afternoon.

Example:  How do you pronounce that?    How do you say that in English?  What do you mean? What does ___ mean?       What did you say?  Sorry, I can’t understand your accent, what did you say?

2. Slow Down.

Look for exceptions to the rules. Or ask for them.  “Is there any exception to that rule?”

Read and Pronounce by LETTERS, not from memory.

3. Pay attention to spelling.

“How do you spell that?”

4. Don’t worry about Grammar. Most Americans don’t have perfect grammar, in fact it’s pretty bad. But… there are some Grammar mistakes we will NEVER make.

Mistakes you never make:

Singular /  Plural?

Articles:  A, An, The…    (Specify)  A class.  The class.    My class.  Yesterday’s class. Fay’s class.

Example:   Go to the store.  (N.)

Example:   Go to store. (V.)

Example: I will see you at the office.

Example: I will see you at office. (N.)   (Which office?)   NOT AN AMERICAN!
