Vocabulary

Impact (n): 1- the force or action of one object hitting another.
E.g.: The impact of the crash was so strong that the car was completely destroyed, but luckily no one got hurt.

Meteor (n): 1- a piece of rock or other matter from space that produces a bright light as it travels through the atmosphere.
E.g.: Most scientists believe that the impact of a huge meteor is what killed the dinosaurs.

Crater (n): 1- the round hole at the top of a volcano, or a hole in the ground similar to this.
E.g.: There’s a lake at the crater of the volcano.
E.g.: With a good telescope, you can see craters on the moon.
E.g.: The craters on the moon are impact craters, and they come from all the meteors that have hit it over millions of years.

Extinct (adj): 1- not existing anymore.
E.g.: There is concern that the panda will soon become extinct.
E.g.: Many animals are becoming extinct because of global warming.

Tomb (n): 1- a large stone structure or underground room where someone, especially an important person, is buried
E.g.: His tomb was covered with yellow flowers.
E.g.: When she died, she was buried in the same tomb as her grandparents.

Persuade (v): 1- to convince; to make you believe in or agree with something.
E.g.: He tried to persuade her to go on a date with him, but he couldn’t do it.
E.g.: At first, he didn’t want to go to the party, but his friends persuaded him.

Battle (n): 1- a fight between armies
E.g.: The battle was won by the Chinese army.
E.g.: Her only brother was killed in battle (= while fighting).

Coffin (n): 1- a long box in which the body of a dead person is buried or burned.
E.g.: He was buried in a wooden coffin.
