upsetting moment in the past month

  • my the most upsetting moment was that my cat live left (leave) me. Actually, I have already spent 7 years with this cat, I grew it up (raise somebody or something up ) from a tinny kitty/kitten to an elegant lady. She shared my happiness and upsetting sadness. especially during the locking/lockdown period last year, with her make my life not so boring/she helped my life not so boring/ she brought a lot of exciting moments/fun/during the…./with her presence, my life was more fun/fulfilled/exciting). So when she finally left me, it made me very sad and I will keep missing her.

What was the most challenging conversation that you had at work?

  • It was several years ago, that time I had just been promoted as a brand manager. but that team was quite new to me. it is a different brand. I was the new manager joining the team and instantly was the team leader from the start. One person in my team was not convinced of my appointment because she wanted to pitch for this manager role previously but she failed. And she thought she qualified for it. So the first day, she had a conversation with me to let me know that she thinks that she was qualified for the manger role and her ex-boss has promised her to let HR find another manager role in the company. She said she had the capability/expertise to well manage the whole job and she asked me not to try to manage her because she can self-manage well. Actually this team member is not a direct report to me, she also helped.. she half report to me. After this conversation, I consult my boss and my peers who is her other manager, also her ex-boss. The information is that this girl is not qualified, very emotional and hard to manage. no one promised her for anything. Actually my boss asked me to fire her but given, I just arrived at this team so it was challenging. This girl was very emotional. The other manager said she yelled at him in public with some disrespectful words, like go back to Europe. He also felt painful and seeked my help to fire her.
  • but you know my company is EU company and HR told me if we want to fire someone we need some solid evidence. We have a long process for it. Actually I just became a people manager, so this is the question on my job and I spent 3 months to fix it. including set up clear goals to her and all goals have clear timeline and KPI and I need to make she clearly know her quality. And all the achievement status has been recorded. It proved that this employee is not qualified for her role and finally we let her go. She yelled and complained to HR that we didn’t treat her well. But finally we got the support of the company and we let her go.

This employee was only half reporting to me while she also had to report to another manager simultaneously. So her work was separated into two parts which meant that she can find excuses in her allocation of work time, which also led (lead) her to complain to both of us for the unreasonable job arrangement.
