Speaking exercise

  1. Economic downturn

production being too much – supply over demand, consumption is slowing down

mismatch between supply and demand

Tencent and Ali are the two biggest companies in China, they are tech companies. They have enjoyed 10 years of rapid growth, during this period, more people got to know social media and they continuously become users of the apps. It’s been 10 years but we don’t have enough new users anymore.

  • the market is very much saturated, there is not enough room for further expansion, the penetration rate has almost reached 100%.

On the other side, there aren’t enough new apps being developed

there is a bottleneck in the tech world, the tech companies aren’t constrained by their abilities to make breakthroughs.

cutting edge/leading position– we offer cutting edge technology in our product, Tencent is in the leading position here in the tech world.

HW has reached its ceiling in developing.

2. Real-estate slowdown

before 2000, the gov realized that one of ways for them to have/gather/pool a huge amount of money in a sudden/rapidly/quickly/the most efficient way/ is to sell properties and land to real-estate companies. That is the easiest way for them to gather money and they can use it to pay the governor to build facilities and infrastructure like railway stations, high speed rails. But 10 years later, the government doesn’t have too many lands to sell, they don’t have enough lands for them to sell. They also issue a lot of debts to the public as they need to raise money. But they realized that they don’t have the ability to pay these debts off. That is the other thing that China is facing right now.

As far as I observed I think people in China are lacking trust and faith in the government and in the environment. the other thing is that Chinese people like to save things and storage. The market is getting slower so it’s not a good time for us to spend a lot of money on things/invest in things we don’t need.

3. Death Penalty

  • What do you think about the death penalty?

I think it’s necessary for Chinese people because we have the history/historical references. Back in the ancient times, we have the tradition if you hit my teeth, it is just/fair for me to hit your teeth. If the government suddenly announces that from now on, the death penalty is abolished in China, I think most of the Chinese people are not gonna accept it. That is the emotional thing.

From other aspects, death penalty I think is effective way to give people an alarm/alarm/give caution. When you conduct something very horrible, when you are trying to do some criminal behave/conduct a crime/ behave like a criminal, you have to think about it twice/give it a second thought. There is a possibility that you could face the death penalty.

Death penalty should be used and sentenced very carefully. An example is: if the law says that if you conduct theft and value is only 50 RMB, you should be punished and sentenced to death. If the law says that, I don’t think that can help decrease the crime rate.

For rapist, we should determine the penalty according to the situation.
