Teacher’s Correction!

A company wants to do something, so they make clones to do thisĀ [for this purpose], to save money.Ā Now the clonesĀ do not know that they are a clone. And every cloneĀ worksĀ for the company for three years and then the companyĀ destroys them andĀ makes a new clone. And one day, a clone is hurt in an accident and the companyĀ uses a new clone and when the new cloneĀ goes outĀ it findsĀ theĀ hurt [injured] clone. Now they know they are clones and they want to do something. And the cloneĀ worksĀ on the moon toĀ find energy on the moon andĀ send it back to earth.

Vocabulary

twinĀ åŒ –Ā it’s similar to a clone, but you have the same mother and father, and you share the exact same looks.

e.g. Henry does not have a twin, he doesn’t even have a siblingĀ å…„弟!

exponentialĀ ęŒ‡ę•° ā€” the moment in time that something improves really quickly; and it improves by a great amount.

e.g. Artificial intelligence is improving at anĀ exponential speed.

harvest / harvesting ꔶ获 ā€” this is something that you usually do in the autumn season after you planted your crops (corn, vegetables, potatoes).

e.g. The clones went to the moon toĀ harvest the moon’s energy.

e.g. In America’s midwest states, they harvest lots and lots of corn.

artificial intelligenceĀ äŗŗå·„ę™ŗčƒ½ – the machines or computers that are becoming so smart, that maybe, one day, they will become smarter than humans.

e.g. Some scientists are very worried that artificial intelligence can be a threat to humans.

threat åØčƒ = something that can hurt me

e.g. Is AI a threat to our safety?

“what they lack..” =Ā what the don’t have

e.g. Students are very intelligent but what they lack is money.

e.g. Old people have lots and lots of money, but what they lack is time.

Homework

Do a writing assignment. Finish your clone movie, and then write a 1 paragraph summary of the ending of the movie.

Reading

In 1950, famous mathematician Alan M. Turing devised a method of testing a computerā€™s intelligence. A person is kept inside a closed cell and asked to speak to a hidden human being and a computer.

The person, who is also called the interrogator (one who questions), does not have any clue about who is the human being and who the machine. His task is to find out which of the two candidates is the computer, and which is the human by asking them questions.

If the interrogator is unable to decide within a certain time, the machine is considered intelligent. However, there has been no machine till date which has been able to pass the Turingā€™s test. This remains one of the biggest challenges of modern day computing.

Although computing sciences have made a lot of progress, passing the Turingā€™s test might be difficult for computers for some time to come.

Speaking exercise

Listening Question: What is a Turing Test?

Henry Original

There is one person and the person and the computer. The person who asks questions can’t see the computer and the person. And the person that asks questions talk with the other person and the computer. And then, he need to guess which is a computer and which is people; if he can’t guess correctly in a certain time, it means the computer intelligence is very high.

Teacher Correction

There are three participants: two humans and a computer. The person who asks questions can’t seeĀ if it’s a computer or a human. The person that asks questionĀ talks with the other person and the computer. And then, heĀ needs to guess which is a computer and which isĀ a person;Ā if he can’t guess correctly in a certain timeĀ [within a certain timeframe], it means the computer’sĀ intelligence is very high.
