Vocabulary

white lie: a harmless lie

eg. People tell white lies to not hurt others.

eg. Would you rather tell white lies or be brutally honest?

provoke: to make someone react, sometimes negatively

eg. These murders have provoked outrage across the country.

eg. His insults provoked the old lady to attack him.

tell a lie/lie/make up lies/a lie

to protect sbd’s interests – to be concerned with how someone would benefit

To protect their profits. They don’t want hurt other people’s feelings. The second one is for a good purpose, while the first one is quite the opposite.

I think lying is not always a bad thing because people they lie just because they just don’t want to hurt other people’s feelings and I think that is acceptable. People don’t want always like living in the truth. It’s something that people want to hear.

Being too honest in China sometimes means you have a low EQ, especially when you’re working for a state-own company with a local boss.

They see as a way to encourage you to be a better person.

I think that lying is human nature. Sometimes, humans make some silly lies and you can see it through their eyes. I always lied to my teacher that I forgot to bring my homework and I told my parents that…..one day my friends just walked back to my home and asked me to give it back to her.

When I was in primary school, my mum doesn’t allow me to watch TV.

It’s a specific channel so if she turns on the TV and she finds that the TV is not on channel zero then she’d know that I watched TV.
