For the last two weeks, I went to some cities, including Zhuhai, Zhongshan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Yiwu and Suzhou. Fortunately, I missed the Delta Virus by a step. Through this lucky trip, I discovered that people’s lives have changed because of Covid-19.

In Shanghai, we used to have nucleic acid tests when we are at risk of catching the virus or have some business trip scheduled. But to people living at/between the border of Macao and Zhuhai, this test is only a tourism service/is only the entry ticket to Macau. If someone pays for the service, they can get tested at once, and the guy can receive a report in 4 hours on the same day. It became a common business in private clinics and the tourism industry.

Why are people in Zhuhai not afraid of Covid-19? The reason is Zhuhai’s economy depends on Macau’s crowd. Before Covid-19, the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area started to operate, and people living in the area became eager to earn some money and have more business. After Covid-19, their world changed. I saw many new shopping malls in Zhuhai which were invested by the gaming Industry, but they don’t have customers. Due to this situation, the local government loosened their tight policy/grip, so we could see the phenomenon at the border. Unfortunately, in the beginning of August, a couple from Macao had the delta virus, so the government started to tighten the policy again. Same goes for Guangzhou now, people in Guangzhou also need to survive before they take any disease precautions.

Shenzhen is another situation. Due to its major industry which is technology, Shenzhen transformed people’s lifestyle through the infectious disease. Why is technology more popular in Shenzhen than in Shanghai? The reason is the average age of Shenzhen citizens is thirty two. And, not only investment and technology from Hong Kong, but also international companies invested in Shenzhen to develop their market scope during this time. With more generation Y and more technological developments, that is why the first stop of international activities is in Shenzhen and not Shanghai currently.
