Vocabulary

Have a way with words: 很善于表达,写作,说故事

Ex: My best friend is a lawyer who has a way with words.

gentle: 柔和,温和 (not the same gentleman)

mate (UK Eng): to address anyone on the street, in casual settings or young men

out-of-towner: 外地人

Ex: Some people think Shanghainese people are superior to out-of-towners.

rip somebody off: 宰人

to get ripped off: 被宰

rip-off n.

Ex: I will go to the car market with my friend who knows a lot about cars because I don’t want to get ripped off.

sharp, astute, shrewd: 精明

Ex: One of my coworkers/colleagues is so astute that she always gets the best deals.

to get the most out of a situation: 为自己谋道最大的利益

Ex: My best friend the lawyer always helps her clients get the most out of every situation.

inclusive (comes from the verb to include): accepting of others who might be different from themselves

Ex: The people in Canada are very inclusive and warm to strangers.

clique: small group of people who are close

(cliquey adj)

roll one’s eyes: 翻白眼

Ex: Everytime someone shows off, I want to roll my eyes.

Have an edge on: feel superior to someone else (having an advantage)

realistic: 现实的人

materialistic: 物质的人

materialism n.

biased: 有偏见的

unbiased: 没有偏见的
