In some countries an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is therefore necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

It is undeniable that taking in a large deal of fast food could be detriment of health. Recent years have been witnessed an increasing number of people who get overweight throughout the world. Heath advisors and doctors is expecting and proposing a quantity of measures to set a limitation on consumption of fast food, including imposing a higher tax. As far as I’m concerned, imposing a higher tax could partially dilute and remove the negative impact brought about by fast food.
Imposing a higher tax is expected and supposed to augment the selling price of fast food thanks to the increasing operating and purchase cost incurred by restaurants. In some circumstances, it is due to the lower price which fast food costs compared with healthy food that people prefer an unhealthy diet. Thus, when the expenditure on fast food is equal or even slightly higher to that on healthy eating, the higher price caused by higher tax is capable of discouraging and preventing people from having too much fast food.
Alternatively, increased government income raised by higher tax is in a position to enhance the areas regarding medical care and health clubs. People with health issues, therefore, are able to have easy and convenient access to more effective and efficient treatment, no matter whether they are in hospital or fitness center. Healthy diet combining with high-quality medical care and physical exercises will certainly serve as a remarkable boost for an emerging healthy society.
Admittedly, imposing a higher tax on fast food, though generating numerous merits, may cause social issues such as unemployment rate. As aggregate demand in the fast food market decline dramatically owing to higher price, managers of fast food restaurants will have no alternative but to discharge a lot of employees in order to maintain the business, otherwise they will face bankrupt, which lead to numbers of unstable factors.
To sum up, I agree with the policy of imposing higher tax on fast food which will no doubt restrain and refrain the booming of fast food industries, and improve our society as a whole, although it may bring some negative effects.
