Refugee / migrant issue is a very serious and complicated phenomenon, attracting worldwide attention in recent years.
Actually there are some differences between refugees and migrants. Refugees usually refer to people who are fleeing from home country because of poverty and violence resulted from economic crisis or government crashing down; while migrants refers to people who transit other countries’ borders illegally in the aim of seeking for better life. In today’ case, I would say Honduran Migrant Caravan is a mixture of refugees and illegal migrants.
What kind of consequences can refugees or illegal migrants bring for the countries who receive them? First of all, it’s an obligation for a sovereignty to receive refugees from the perspective of humanitarian spirit, especially for western developed countries as they are more capable of doing so. Secondly, it may become a major financial burden for the receiving countries if the refugees population gets out of control. Accomodating refugees will cost a lot of fisical investment while they are not creating any social value for the country. Thirdly, some countries will consider refugees or illegal migrants as potential threats to homeland security. Because some of them could have criminal records or could be terrorists, who are enjoying the existing social benefits while doing harm to the country. This will also resulted in some countries throwing out refugees ban to reject receiving any of them.
Therefore, what should we do to deal with refugees / illegal migrant if it is an inevitable issue? First and foremost, we have to admit that it’s their lawful right to seek for better lives. Maybe the receiving governments can innovate their policies to avoid political cheating, such giving refugees temporary protections rather than permanent citizenship. Then we can try to change our perception of them. It’s a good opportunity to make use of their labor force during their legal stay period as a strategic measure to meet the challenge of aging population. Last but not the least, we need to realize that dealing with refugees or illegal migrants is not a single country’ obligation or matter, it is a global issue and requires worldwide collaborations.
