VIP Class Notes (Consultant)

This was my second time meeting Rico, just two days apart. We still need to meet more to better gauge his understandings. A key note is that he will benefit from coming out of his comfort zone and speaking without worry of judgement. I hope to see even more improvement with our next session where he might be even more open about interests and where he feels unsure of the words I speak.

Vocabulary

The ball in badminton is called a “birdie” or a “shuttlecock”.

The player uses the “racquet” to hit the shuttlecock.
What is the winning score? What score do you need to win?

Score – points ; number of goals or value of goals in a sport or game.

ex. – I scored 7 points in our basketball game today.
ex. – What score do we need to win the game?

Teammate – A person on your team

ex. – I have some very tall teammates.
ex. – One of my teammates has been playing the sport for 3 years; he’s the best!

Court – The space that a sport is played; this is usually an indoor space and not on grass.

ex. – the basketball court down the street is new and so clean.
ex. – The badminton court is also used for tennis and volleyball.

Net – A grid made of string or rope, usually intended for catching things.

ex. – It’s not okay to use nets for catching fish, as it can be harmful and catch too many.
ex. – The volleyball net separates our team from the opponent team.

versus – VS or 2v2   Against; competing against
ex. – I went to a LA Lakers versus Celtics game.
ex. – Let’s play some 2v2 matches before we play battle royale.

Rectangular – rectangle shaped. similar to a square of two pairs of matching length sides.
ex. – The badminton cours is rectangular in shape, as are most other courts.
ex. – Most printer paper is in the shape of a rectangle. If it was a square, all the sides would be the same length.

Penalty / foul – When something is done wrong like breaking a rule in a sport.

ex. – The player hit the birdie with his racquet twice in a row, which is a foul.

ex. – I received a personal penalty for shoving another player after he said something mean to me.

Competition – game; match

ex. – I participated in a swimming competition and actually did a great job.

Sportsmanship – the practice of playing a game for fun and being kind

ex. – It is just as important to teach sportsmanship as it is the rules of a game.

Good sport – someone who is kind a friendly in a sport or game, especially even to opponents

ex. – I always try to be a good sport, even when I don’t win.

Opponents – The people on the other team that you play against.

ex. – Our opponents are wearing red shirts, while we wear blue.

Talk smack – say bad or rude things, often against an opponent in a competition

ex. – Don’t talk smack to your opponent. Try to enjoy the game whether you win or lose.

Tire – made of rubber, the part of a wheel that touches the ground.

ex. – My bike tire needs more air

Sprocket – the metal or plastic part of a bike wheel that connect the rim to the axle.

ex. – The MeiTuan bikes have yellow, plastic sprockets on their wheels.

Rim – The metal ring of a wheel on a bike or car that connects the tire to the sprockets.

ex. – I bent the rim on my bike against a curb, so now it doesn’t ride smoothly.

Wheel – The round part of a bike, car, vehicle, or other things that allows them to roll easily.

ex. – The wheels on the bus go round and round.

Chain – Usually made of metal links. Like a necklace, or to lock a bike to a pole, or a bike chain that connects the wheels to the pedals.

ex. – A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

ex. – I want a big gold chain necklace for my costume.

Link – The individual loop that connects to many others to make a chain.
ex. – One of the links on my cheap chain is coming undone.

Metaphor

Bike frame – The large solid structure that makes up most of the bike.

Brake – the verb of stopping a car/bike. or the object that does this.

ex. – Brake gently so you don’t flip over the handlebars.
ex. – Slam the brakes if a child runs right in front of your car!

Globe – spherical map of the earth

ex. – My English teacher, Joe, is from the other side of the globe.
ex. – I want a globe of the Earth so I can study the many places that I will some day travel.

Flag – The designed cloth that represents a place usually.  国旗

ex. – The American flag is red, white, and blue.

fan- The thing that blows or moves air around, usually to cool off or dry something.

ex. – I turned on the fan but it barely helped. I think I will use the air conditioner instead.

ammo – bullets and other things that guns/cannons/etc use
ex. – When I play PUBG, I always have to ask my teammates for more bullets.
