2 X VIP Class Notes (Lisa)

1.Reading

A broken leg for bonk

Angela read the book to me and then I read it with her. We did a book walk and discussed what we see in the pictures and why they are like that. We discussed a lot of new words in the story and talked about why the characters had certain actions.

Angela could read the book but had some significant mistakes and could only understand parts of the book. For example, before reading we did a book walk, which is to guess the story by looking at the cover picture and title of the book. Angela believed that the green dinosaur with the letter “L” on his sweater is the character Bonk. But through reading, we can see that the character’s name is Lurk. After Angela read the story to me I asked her the question again and she still did not who was Bonk and who was Lurk. Therefore I went through the whole story with her again to help her understand the plot and the new words.

Dragonflies

I read dragon flies with Angela and look in detail at what the chapters and pictures are about. This book is a bit challenging for her. The concepts and words are hard for her to understand in English. Nonfiction material is usually more challenging for kids. Next time please bring a nonfiction book of lower difficulty. Angela relies on Chinese a lot in class. However, she is getting used to hearing and speaking English more.

2.Writing

I practiced writing sentences with Angela and I could see that she knows how to write on lines. She doesn’t always remember to use capitalization at the beginning of words and she doesn’t remember to use punctuation. Please bring a notebook with writing lines next time.

3. Homework

Listen to A broken leg for bonk and Dragonflies every day and make sure she pays more attention to the words and meaning.

Write 4 sentences. I wrote 4 question on a piece of paper, answer each question and write a sentence. Please write it on a notebook with writing line. Please remember to bring the notebook to next class.

Bring two more books to class next week. One fiction story book and an easier nonfiction book, or two story books.
