Vocabulary
continuously: long time in a row
ie. She has been nice to me continuously.
consecutively: many in a row / no skipping
ie. I have 8 consecutive classes today.
get rid of : pao qi (for outdated things)
ie. Get rid of your parents and come over.
ie. I want to get rid of some old clothes.
asking price: the fixed price you asked for
ie. He’s a stupid buyer because he didn’t negotiate and got the car at the asking price.
snooty/snobbish/arrogant: ao man
ie. I don’t like that snooty man who just came from France.
splurge: xia mai, without plan or budget
ie. Ally is quite poor now so she can’t splurge; she has to cut down/back on her spending.
humble: qian xu (kind of neg)
ie. He is a very humble person.
ie. Welcome to my humble home. ( ke tao hua) I apologize in advance for any inconvenience./for taking up your time.
high-profile: high-key: can be used for people/clients/companies/deals/cases….
ie. Wing, if you work hard this year I will give you a high-profile client/case next year.
ie. He is a high-profile basketball star.
low-profile: di diao
ie. You may want to keep a low-profile as a foreigner in China because these are special times.
timid: low-key, shy
ie. The timid little girl never talks in class.
outspoken: adj for someone who likes to talk about themselves and their opinions a lot
ie. The protest leader is a very outspoken person.
chatty(neg)/talkative: hua duo
ie. My ayi is very chatty; she can’t shut up.
hectic: mang luan
ie. The Pudong airport security was hectic.
random: no rules
ie. Prisoners have to take random drug testing.
take(v) inventory (n): qing dan
ie. I have to take inventory of our new products.
Grammar
- put the noun you want to describe first, then write out your sentence normally.
- when you use a verb as your subject, add “ing”
I haven’t seen you in a long time/while./ in a while.
How have you been? (in this time duration/time period)
“Things happen” “Life happens” = mei you ban fa
some is not “yi xie”
– only means “yi xie” when we’re counting, in numbers
ie. I drank some coffee. / I drank a cup of coffee. There are some children in the park.=There are a few children..
“s” = yi xie
ie. I like puppies.
“to” = direction prep
ie. location: I go to school.
ie. destination (idea): I try to be better. I hope to improve. She looks up to me.
ie. She looks down on me./ looks down her nose on me…

When I came here yesterday, I met a guy. We talked for 10 minutes and realized we couldn’t understand each other./ before realizing we couldn’t understand each other.
For writing, it’s OK … to make sentences longer..
For writing, it’s easy/not too difficult to make longer sentences, but for speaking, it’s harder for me.
