Do as I say, not as I do

all nighter – to do something through the night into morning

eg: I haven’t studied all year and the test is tomorrow, so I need to pull an all nighter.

laid back – relaxed, easy going

eg: He’s the most laid back teacher here, so I’m sure he’ll let you make up the homework.

detrimental – having a negative impact

eg: She argues that watching too much TV is detrimental to a child’s intellectual and social development.

point of diminishing returns – a point at which the benefits received from something become less and less, until they are not useful anymore

eg: Excessive homework ignores the principle of diminishing returns, because the excess homework provides little learning value.

absolve – to free yourself from guilt or responsibility

eg: Saying sorry does not absolve you if you continue to be rude.

downplay – to make something seem like less

eg: Some parents like to downplay their children’s skills or abilities.

Homework

Exploring versatility of basic words. 

Write six unique examples using take in a phrase. Each one should have slightly different meaning. Your sentence should provide enough context to clearly know the meaning of the word.

Example: They had a perfect give and take relationship, it was extremely reciprocal.(adj.)
