On his way to the school to take an exam, Mr Bean was just behind this very slow 3 wheeled car and he wanted to be in front of that stupid, slow, 3 wheeled car. With that in mind, he went left, right, left, right, left (he swerved back and forth), and finally found a little gap so he could go in front of the car (he could overtake the car). He pushed down the accelerator a little bit and the car rushed forward, bumping into the 3 wheeled car, making it almost fall / tip over since the car was pretty unstable. He arrived at his high school and backed up (go back) quickly to park his car, crashing into a pole which almost fell to the ground / toppled over. Even though he crashed into the pole, he didn’t care about it and quickly got out the lock behind his seat. The lock was a normal lock / padlock (that) he would usually use for locking a chest for example and threw the key inside the car by opening the back window / he threw it through the back window as if it was like a door and closed it right away while only thinking about the exams / while focusing entirely on the upcoming exam.

    – she feels her grammar and logic is very Chinese and wants to correct it. She works in an industry that has a lot of complicated professional words and in the future she will need English a lot more.

After our class I can see she is able to express herself but has low confidence in her ability to express. Her sentences are often short but she knows how to use connectives. Pronunciation is also quite good with no obvious big problems. She can correct some of her own mistakes especially with tense. I think for now the most important thing is to build confidence in speaking and sentence building, learn to self correct, and practice talking about lots of different topics so she can remember the words she has previously learned.

Suggested course: In class: daily life speaking to improve confidence and comfort with English, correct mistakes, learn vocabulary to talk about hobbies, interests, plans, and practice different kinds of sentences so she can use the grammar & vocabulary she has learned. At home: write a diary using the words and grammar from class. After 3 months: start to read books and write about more advanced topics related to work, the news, and other topics. Learn more advanced grammar and sentence structures for use in writing. Start doing listening practice with videos at 80% speed and review in class.

    – wants to do a PhD in international law, studied in QLD for some time and has visited a few countries. He feels grammar is the main problem for now, and feels his listening and writing are not very good.

After our class I can see that grammar is the biggest issue that we need to focus on for now. He also could improve pronunciation but we won’t do this now. Pronunciation may be causing some listening problems so we may need to fix it later. He can make long sentences using connectives, and his knowledge of grammar is good, but he’s not comfortable using what he has learned.

And it often takes many many tries til (until) that magical moment when what you’re trying to build comes to life, it requires perseverance. It requires imperfection. We are immediately see in our program, our girls fear of not getting it right, of not being perfect.

Every girl’s code teacher tells me the same story. During the first week, girls are learning how to code, a student will call her over, and she’ll say:” I don’t know what (which) code to write. The teacher will look at her screen, and she will see a blank text editor. If she didn’t know any better, she would think the student spent the past 20 minutes just staring at the screen. But if she presses undo a few times, she will see that her student wrote code and deleted it. She tried, she came close, but she didn’t get it exactly right, Instead of showing the progress that she made, she’d rather show nothing at all: perfection or bust. It turns out that our girls are really good at coding, but it’s not enough just to teach them to code.

My friend Ladbrown who is a professor at the university of Colombia, teaches the intro to JAVA, tells me about his office hours with (the start and end time each day that he spends with his) computer science students. When the guys are struggling with an assignment, they’ll come in and they’ll say: Professor, there’s something wrong with my code. The girls will come in and say: Professor, there’s something wrong with me. We have to begin to undo the socialization perfection, we’ve gotta combine it (we’ve got to combine it). We are building a sisterhood that lets girls know that they are not alone. Because trying harder is not gonna fix a broken system.

Question: Nowadays, many people buy products from other countries. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh its disadvantages?

The globalization of consumer markets has led to a popular trend of purchasing imported goods. While this practice raises concerns regarding local industries and environmental sustainability, I firmly believe that its benefits for consumers and the broader economy decisively outweigh the drawbacks.

There’s no denying that this trend poses significant challenges. Primarily, local manufacturers, especially small and medium-sized companies, often face competition from large international corporations. Without the economies of scale of global giants, they may struggle to compete on price, potentially leading to reduced market share, financial struggles, or even closure, which can result in job losses within the community. Furthermore, from an ecological perspective, the long-distance transportation of goods, particularly by air and sea shipments, generates a substantial carbon footprint, contributing to global environmental problems.

Despite the disadvantages mentioned above, the advantages generated by international trade are more profound and wide-ranging. The very competition that pressures local companies also acts as a powerful push for innovation and quality improvement. To survive and thrive, local companies are compelled to enhance product design, invest in technology, and improve customer service, thereby improving industry standards overall. For consumers, this competitive landscape is overwhelmingly positive. It gives them access to a vast choices. Consequently, they enjoy not only superior quality and innovative features but also more competitive prices, ultimately increasing their purchasing power and standard of living.

In conclusion, although the foreign products can threaten local businesses and carries environmental costs, these disadvantages are manageable through supportive government policies and conscious consumer choices. The dynamic benefits of heightened competition, consumer empowerment, and global economic make it evident that the advantages of buying goods from other countries are greater.

    Reading

Hi everyone, thank you for making time for this meeting. Today, I’ll talk about a Chinese generic drug company XXX that is using a package box very similar to ours — and what impact that has had. I’ll also share some comparison data to show how this has affected us.

First, let’s look at the packaging. On the right side of the slide, you can see our box — with our signature white background and red vertical stripes on the side.
On the top left is the current box from this generic company. It looks almost identical to ours, which could easily confuse customers.
At the bottom left is their previous design — similar, but still different.
This shows a clear trend: they changed their design to copy ours, likely to mislead customers.

Next, let’s review the timeline. We launched our drug in 1988 and have since built trust and a strong reputation among patients.
Then in 2020, they updated their packaging to look much more like ours — which strongly suggests an attempt at unfair competition.

That said, when we check recent sales data, we don’t see a clear drop in sales tied to their packaging change. So we can’t simply claim it directly caused financial loss.
But that doesn’t mean their actions haven’t hurt our brand and reputation.

Now, because they’ve registered a design patent, we can’t directly sue them over the packaging design.
However, after consulting external legal advisors, they recommend we file a civil case against them for unfair competition.

Through this case, we aim to:

    1. Send a clear message to generic companies that this kind of copying is unacceptable.
    2. Raise awareness about the importance of protecting packaging designs with patents.

Of course, our hope is to win and stop them from using this box — but we should be realistic that success is not guaranteed.

Finally, the budget we’ve set aside for this legal action is approximately XXX.

Let me know if you have any questions so far.

    Good afternoon,

As usual, I woke up at 7:45 this morning, got myself ready for work. And then I took shuttle bus from hotel to work.

(Perhaps it’s near CNY holiday, I found there were not many colleagues in the office.)
Turning on my laptop I started my today, checking mail boxes, discussing slides for Wednesday’s review with the lead of that meeting, also I made some notes to remind myself that I need to complete by Friday.

I ordered a beef curry for lunch. Later, my colleagues and I had our lunch in pantry, we chatted about our weekend as well as plans for CNY.

    Today we focused on:

Main Structure: Give a point → Explain it → Give examples → Conclude the point (don’t forget to use connection words)

    Reading

    • Question:Has your hometown changed much in recent years?

Absolutely, it’s undergone some significant transformations. I’d say the most notable change is the infrastructure. For instance, a new subway line has been completed, which has dramatically alleviated traffic congestion. On the other hand, this rapid development has come at a cost – some of the older, traditional neighborhoods have been replaced by modern shopping malls, which is a bit of a pity. So, it’s a mix of progress and loss, really.

    使用“I’d say”引出要点,“For instance”具体举例,“On the other hand”展示多角度思考,“So”进行总结

    • Question: Do you think technology will eventually replace teachers in the classroom?

That’s a compelling question. While I believe technology is reshaping education, I doubt it will completely replace teachers. Admittedly, technologies like AI tutors and online platforms can provide personalized learning paths and access to vast information, which is invaluable. However, the role of a teacher extends beyond knowledge transmission. For example, they offer crucial emotional support, motivate students, and teach essential soft skills like collaboration and critical thinking through human interaction—areas where a machine simply cannot replicate the nuance. So, I see the future as a collaborative one, where technology is a powerful tool used by teachers to enhance, not replace, the human element of education.

    观点 → 让步 (Admittedly…) → 反驳/深化 (However…) → 举例 (For example…) → 总结 (So…)

Nowadays, many people buy products from other countries. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh its disadvantages?

In many cities, problems with traffic congestion are increasing. What are the causes of this issue, and what measures can be taken to solve it?

After our class I can see her main problems now are grammar (tenses, clear subjects for each sentence, articles (a + the)), limited vocabulary, overuse of connectives (and / because / so), pronunciation (vowel sounds), and confidence in communication.

Recommended course: In class – conversation practice, simple reading for pronunciation & vocabulary, correct diary writing homework, review last class notes, sentence building. At home – diary writing, review class notes, use vocabulary and grammar from class in written homework. After 3 months – higher level reading, connection pronunciation, upgrade vocabulary, learn new connectives.

Just as the lightbulb lit up, Bender jumped in and asked now can we have some money? Then obviously the professor said “no”. Although everyone thought the spaceship was way cooler than the wires, the professor thought the wires were way cooler than the spaceship. Just as the professor was about to show them all the wires, there was a loud banging on the door, which made them all scared to death so they rushed into the spaceship with Fry pressing random buttons which made a coffee cup come out and coffee dropping in the cup. Leela took off her jacket and just as the countdown went to zero they blasted off into space at the speed of light. As they were blasting off, the anti-air gun shot in the sky but the spaceship dodged it and the fireworks were distracting the shooters. Once they were in space, the professor decided that they should be a spacecrew and that he has 3 chips left and they could all have a job because the last space crew was… that’s not important anyway.
