Today I would like to write about traditions in the Czech Republic, especially about the Burning of Witches. On the evening of April 30th, people prepare a big bonfire, where they want to burn anything that looks like a witch. In the past, people used to believe that the power of witches would make the weather warmer. So they thought that if they made a fake (=decoy) witch and burned it, they could finally get a hot weather after a long winter.

How is a typical witch prepared for burning looks like? First we have to fix two large sticks together in the form of a cross. Then we can put old shirts, pants and socks (filled) with straw on it. Now, the witch is prepared for burning on the bonfire. After this ceremony, people roast sausages on sticks, play guitar and sing songs.
