SLASH

There is an interesting phenomenon called “SLASHâ€, which means a person has two jobs, one is a normal nine to five job, and the other one is what they really want to do. The second job or their passion/hobby, isn’t just for making money, but for making their life more meaningful. They are a normal white collar in the office, but maybe they are an amazing dancer at night, or maybe they have thousands of followers waiting for their posts.

It is a good thing for you to be a “SLASHâ€, you can quit your job and fire your boss without hesitation, because you know you have more important things to do, and which you can earn money from, maybe more money.
On the opposite side of the coin, it is hard to balance the main job and the second one, which means you probably will fail at both of them. Or someone just has too many things they want to do and can’t succeed at anything. Maybe they just want to become a “SLASH†to show off, they aren’t really interested in them.

Eg.  I failed the test.

Eg.  I failed at life/ I fail at life.

Eg.  I failed at keeping my plants alive.

Fail the test/pass the test

Eg.  Can’t succeed at anything.

Eg.  Can’t find success with anything.

Success: noun

Succeed/succeeded/ succeeding: verb

Eg.  I succeeded at keeping my plants alive.

Eg.  I am succeeding at keeping my plants alive.  (so far so good)

Heard (herd)

Confiscate (con – fis – kate)

Why the government try to confiscate the gun – Why is the government trying to confiscate guns

Take a phone when they drive – Take a call when they are driving

Hell bent taking away the guns from people – hell bent on taking away….

Accountable:  to be held responsible/ to hold someone responsible.

Eg.  Damon and Chen hold each other accountable for their diet and exercise.

Gun issues

I heard a record about a gun shop owner challenged the President Obama with the perspective that why is the government trying to confiscate the gun instead of holding bad guys accountable for their actions. Just like they apply common sense to other society issues. They will not restrict vehicles, cell phone or alcohol, when irresponsible people drink and drive and kill others. But when it comes to guns, the government are hell bent on taking away it from good people, who use the gun to protect themselves from bad guys.

Firstly, I thought the perspective does make sense and I didn’t know how to defeat it(say it back?) . But after I deeply thought about it, I found that was totally different things. The drivers’ problem is more like an accident, and the fatality and injure are limited, but the guns’ problem, it will lead a
Terrorist attack or some tragedies in campus.

The President Obama didn’t return the question directly. He insisted on his opinion about gun issue that it can protect people from tragedies.

Rebuttal:  to rebut.

Rebut:  to oppose by using contrary proof. (evidence/research) like in a debate.
