review unit 15 Grammar (past perfect)

Today we focused on:


intro + understanding how to use the past perfect (refer to Unit 15 grammar)

Next Class Focus

Review tenses (present / present continuous / present perfect …) and when to use them. 

Speaking exercise

I was study accounting and finance in Uni -> I studied accounting and finance in Uni 

After I graduated I searched the jobs for accountants -> I searched for accounting jobs / an accountant position

so I go for accounting -> I went for accounting 

I am keep doing as accounting since then -> I kept doing that / I have stayed in accounting since then 

I have been living in Sydney for 7 years and I moved back to BJ in 2010 -> I lived in Sydney for 7 years

It is 12 years already. -> it has been 12 years already 

In my jobs it is not many opportunities I can speak English. -> In my jobs there are not many opportunities to speak English.

I thought maybe it is proper English but maybe it is not. / I am unsure about what proper English is

my vocabulary not increasing because I didn’t read -> my vocabulary is not increasing because I don’t read

The discount is based/calculated on the retail price.

Even you go to the dealer you can get a discount more than they gives to the employee. ->

Even you go to the dealer (directly) you can get a bigger discount than what they give to the employees / The employee discount is not advantageous / is not great. Sometimes you can get a better discount with a dealer than if you use your employee discount 

They are get into the hole and they want to buy good cars.-> they enter this cycle and want to buy better and better cars 

Vocabulary

Vicious cycle (n) something that keeps getting worse and worse
During Covid the company had to take a loan to survive but sales didn’t pick up and they had to take another loan and they entered a vicious cycle 

Virtuous cycle  (n) something that keeps getting and better
After getting my first job I entered a virtuous cycle, I improved my skills and kept getting better and better jobs

Deadlock (n) situation in which you cannot make any progress
No one wanted to compromise and the negotiation entered a deadlock 

Grammar

Tense

Present simple (I work)  / present continuous (I am working) / present perfect (I have worked) 

Past simple (I worked) / past continuous (I was working)  / past perfect (I had worked)

Future simple (I will work) / Future continuous ( I will be working) / future perfect ( I will have worked)

You always use a past simple first, then if the action you mention after happened even before you use a past perfect 
I worked in Sydney in 2007, then I moved back to China in 2010  before all that (in 2005) I had studied in China 

When you talk or describe a situation in general you just use the present
Covid is bad for the economy
Life expectancy improves every year 

Past continuous : to explain you were doing something when an interruption happened
I was eating when Tom entered the room
In 2020 we were doing great and then Covid happened

Keep doing something : not stop
We have to keep improving if we want to reach our KPIs.
