Vocabulary

Algebra – math where you use variables, letters that are used instead of numbers
e.g. y = x + 2

Geometry – studying shapes with math
e.g. In geometry we study triangles, squares, diamonds, circles, and all kinds of shapes.
e.g. The Pythagorean theorem uses algebra to do geometry: a^2 + b^2 = c^2

Puzzle games – a puzzle is like a small problem that you have to figure out how to solve it; what is the best way to do something
e.g. In this game, we have to figure out to get to a big monster, and how to defeat the monster.

Role-playing game (rpg) – when the game has a main character, and you play pretending to be that character
e.g. Legend of Zelda

Shooters – a game where you fight other people using guns, often as some army
e.g. Call of Duty, Halo

Casual – when you do something for fun, because you like to do it; not serious
Serious – when you do something for a grade (like in school), to make money, because you think you should
e.g. Ping-pong is usually a more casual sport than basketball, because you can play it as a game without having to run a lot and get sweaty.
e.g. We have to be serious about our studies so that we can get good grades and get a good job.

Diving board – a place high above a pool that you can jump from into the pool

e.g. When class is over, I don’t like to stay at school. I would rather go home!
