vowel (n)a speech sound produced by humans when the breath flows out through the mouth without being blocked by the teeth, tongue, or lips
元音
A short vowel is a short sound as in the word “cup”.
短元音是诸如 cup 一词中的短音。
A long vowel is a long sound as in the word “shoe”.
长元音是诸如 shoe 一词中的长音。

VOWELS-A, E, I, O, U

We use an /ən/ before a vowel sound:

an apple an old shoe an orchestra an umbrella

Some words that begin with a vowel letter in writing have a consonant sound:

/ə ju:niˈvɜ:sɪti/ /ə wʌn …/

a university/ a one-year-old child

In speaking, we use a /ə/ before a consonant sound:

a car a house a big truck a wheel a grey day

A happy and smart teacher

A big and soft bed
