Today, we learned a few new words and reviewed some vocabulary from our last class.

Vocabulary

neat (adj) – alcohol without water is neat
I had some neat whiskey

diluted (adj) / dilute (verb) – something that has been made less strong by adding water
You  can dilute whiskey by adding a little soda water

edge (noun) – the sharp side of something
Water takes the edge off whiskey

detention (noun) – the situation where they keep someone or something who broke a rule or regulation
The bananas were subjected to detention because they did not comply with the import regulations

detain (verb) – to keep someone or something who broke a rule or regulation
The man was detained by police for questions, but he was not arrested

Pronunciation

apartment – a part mint (remember to say the /t/ at the end of ‘part’)
department – di part mint (remember to say the /t/ at the end of ‘part’)
