In today’s class, we talked about the events of yesterday, today and tomorrow. We learned some new vocabulary and identified a few words that you had some trouble with.

Vocabulary

Deck
I understand that this word is used in your company to refer to a PPT. However, after doing some research on the matter I should tell you that it is not common to use it like this. The problem is that ‘deck’ has quite a lot of different meanings in English already. To avoid confusion, you may use the phrase ‘PowerPoint Deck’ when you are talking to someone outside your company. If they are still confused by this phrase, you can try to say ‘PowerPoint Slides” to help people understand.

a happy accident / Serendipity – an unplanned lucky event
The scheduling mistake was a happy accident because I was too busy on Tuesday to have class.

recongize – to know something by sight or sound
I recognize that word, but I can’t remember it clearly.
I don’t recognize his face. I have never seen him before.

realize – to become aware of something
I realized that I had not received any messages from you or Judy.

child / children
Remember that ‘child’ is singular and ‘children’ is plural.

pleased as punch – very happy about something
This word comes from the 1700s when there was a popular kind of puppet show called “Punch and Judy”.
I am pleased as punch that I have gotten the vaccine.

hurt – usually a verb
I hurt my finger.

pain – usually a noun (used with ‘have/has’ or ‘experience’)
I have some back pain

self-isolate – to stay away from others (usually to avoid infection)
If you come to China you will have to self-isolate for 14 days.

side-effect – something that happens as a secondary result
Have you had any side-effects from getting the vaccine?

Grammar

It was over 8 P.M.
It was after 8 P.M.

They are children with the same age as Dodo.
They are children the same age as Dodo.
They are children Dodo’s age.
They are children who are the same age as Dodo.
