Online Class Notes (Joe)

Today we focused on:

We talked about travel plans, COVID, and the economy.

Pronunciation

fail – /feɪl/
feel – /fiːl/
Pay attention to the mouth shape with the first vowel

turn – /təːn/
ten – /tɛn/
ton – /tʌn/
these sounds are all very close, so it’s important to pronounce them carefully

cultural – /ˈkʌltʃ(ə)r(ə)l/
You don’t have to say the vowels in brackets. It’s easier to drop them and say ‘Kal chril’
The same is true for /ˈnatʃ(ə)r(ə)l/

Grammar

I don’t go to Poland
This makes me think you don’t usually want to go to Poland for some reason.
For example, I don’t go the eastern cities in my country because they are too hot.

I haven’t been/gone to Poland
This makes it clear that you are talking about never having gone there.

When asking questions, remember to change the position of the subject and the verb OR use a tag question.
You are going to Europe?
Are you going to Europe?
You are going to Europe, right?

Vocabulary

turn around – to change direction
The economy is doing poorly now, but it will turn around

turn out – to reach a condition later
The economy will turn out OK
