Australia is home to many indigenous populations known as Aboriginal people or Aborigines. However, some consider the term pejorative. Then, legally, the native Australian population are referred to as Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. Depending o the regions, some also prefer regional terms, such as Koori or Muri.

Recently a genetic study found that the Aboriginals ancestors may have left the Africa continent up to 75,000 years ago, likely representing one of the oldest population outside Africa.

Academic researchers estimated that by the time the European colonizers arrived in Australia, the native population exceeded 750,000 individuals, living in over 500 different groups and speaking around 300 dialects.

The Aboriginals are nomads, hunters and food collectors, generally living in rustic shelters used as temporary protection. They practice the animist religion, which represents a strong connection between all the natural species and a superior God, whereas human beings share the natural benefits similar to other animals.

Currently, the Aboriginals represent only 1% of the Australian population, living in some villages in the desert and occupying peripheral neighbourhoods in big cities.
