Respect is a personal value to live by, no matter the situation or the people we are dealing with. It’s not about liking the other person. It’s about taking the other person seriously. This includes an appreciation for those who are different from us. If I can’t value their differences, then I probably won’t be very respectful to them.

I fully agree with that. Allow me to add that, for me, respect also means allowing for other peoples’ opinions a well as appreciation and recognition. Simply put, for me respect is one pillar of our co-existence. I lived in Japan for four years, which made a huge impression and impact on me. Respect is a huge part of Japanese culture, as seen throughout their society. Take the Japanese Sumo wrestlers, for instance. When they win, they aren’t celebrating a victory, they’re not flaunting it in front of their opponents – they actually bow to them. This shows respect for the opponent’s professionalism, his efforts and his performance in the match, even if he lost.
