When I was about 10 years old. At that time i really believed that we had santa in the world and I really eager to have my own christmas gift. Since we were not in western countries, it’s not very common for children to receive christmas gifts. So I think at the time I was a student in primary school and like a week before that year’s christmas, my parents and I went to a shopping mall and I asked them to buy a sock for me. I wanted to hang the sock in my bedroom and I hoped that the santa can put my gift into the sock. And they bought the sock for me and I hanged it in my bedroom. After the christmas day I checked the sock and I found I really got a gift in the sock and it’s a barbie, but it’s not a normal barbie. That barbie can dance. So on that morning when our family ate breakfast together I asked my parents whether the gifts were sent by you or the gifts were sent by the santa and they told me that they didn’t prepare anything for me, and the gifts were from santa. I was really happy at that time and in the evening, when I came back home before my parents since they needed to work and I noticed a package of the barbie on the desk in their bedroom. I realised that the gift is from my parents. I’m still very happy.

In most of Chinese middle school, the school has a rule that students need to cut their hairs regularly, for boys they need to be no more than 2cm and for girls our hairs can’t be longer than our jaws and so all the students need to cut their hair before they go to school so the day before going to school I went to hair dresser to cut my hair and for me I think there was some special situation that when I was a little girl I joined a table tennis team. It’s a very professional and formal team so the team had a rule that girls can only have very very short hairs, so after I quitted from the table tennis team it’s near the end of my primary school so in the last 2 years of my primary school I really cherished the time that I could have long hairs so the day I went to cut my hairs I felt very depressed and I told the hair dresser that just cut my hairs that align with my jaw (as long as possible). Then I went to school. At the first day of school our teachers checked every student’s hair one by one and the teacher told me that my hair style was not qualified. It still need to be shorter and I was very disappointed and in that evening I go to the hair dresser again and after finishing cutting my hairs I cried.

I think it’s important but not very important. I think it’s normal to have negative feelings in the first day of job or first day of school since the environment around you are totally new and strange / unfamiliar. It’s normal to feel nervous or uncomfortable during this period of time. And I know some companies they design some specific agenda or some welcome gifts to staff who come to the company for the first day. They aim (pr) to build an amazing experience for them but I think the positive feelings they build can’t last for long time. I think the overall feelings, like your feelings towards your work loads, your feelings towards your tasks you do, and the work-life balance, these overall feelings are more important than the first day experience. In the beginning I say I think that it’s important but not very important. The reason I think it’s important is because I once had a very bad experience about onboarding on a lab. They just assigned a workspace for me and they only gave me the access to the lab, only the door to the lab. They didn’t give me any other access and they assign a workspace for me but I couldn’t use the computer on the desk since there’s other staff members PC with password. So that’s a really bad experience and this experience reflects that the lab admin people are not respect for interns. At that time I thought that it was OK. It won’t impact my research experience but as a result, the whole staff members in this lab didn’t respect interns. They just treat us as very cheap labor.
