Studies show that all complications of diabetes are preventable. Even after the onset of diabetes complications, deterioration will be slowed by controlling blood sugar. The target for glycated haemoglobin for patients with type 1 diabetes is 7.5%, with the target for patients with type 2 being below 7%. Blood pressure is regarded as a contributing factor leading to diabetes complications. To avoid complications, the blood pressure of diabetes patients should be lower than 140/80mmHg.

As a general rule, self-nursing plays an important role in diabetes, however when these patients require assistance, nursing should be administered by experienced and qualified professionals. In England, traditionally, professional nurses are not only responsible for clinic work, but also diabetes education and research. Diabetes education has traditionally been done in a one-on-one setting, however, health professionals are starting to accept that diabetes patients often communicate and thus are able to learn about the illness as well as suitable treatments and self-management options from one another. Therefore, group education has already become a standard. It is not only diabetes patients who can take part in group education, but also, their family, friends, housekeepers and nursing workers in nursing homes and other care facilities.

With the development of technology people have greater access to health education through tools such as the internet, television, and from word of mouth. A number of institutions are currently providing CDs or television programs to disseminate knowledge of this disease. Therefore, patients have more choices, and the role of nurses has started to change. Nurses are no longer the primary source of information, but rather their role has become to facilitate the understanding of the advice and determine suitability for each patient through a forum which includes the patients themselves, their family, friends, and loved ones.
