When it comes to the heated debate that people should not pay for public transportation, opinion vary according to personal background, emotional concerns even personalities. Based on my personal knowledge and understanding, I firmly side with the statement that people should pay for public transportation.
First, the cost of payment of public transportation is very small. To be more specific, this cost just account very little proportion for citizen’s total income. In Beijing, there are only 3 yuan for subway and 2 yuan for bus. It is very cheap for normal citizen, even there are discount if you use bus card or you are a old mans or students. In the rent research, the experts show that the public transportation make up 0.2% for citizen average total income. This data is a good evidence to proof the public transportation cost is very small.
Second, the government can use the fund from public transportation to do some other things, such as infrastructure building or virescence. There are more benefits can be obtained with the fare paid by passengers. Although the spending of one passenger is very small, there are about 3 billion passenger pay ticket everyday. That is a very big fund. Government can use that money not only to prove the quality of the public transportation, but also to buy some new high-tech transportation, which is eco-friendly that has less pollution to the environment. So making it free will mean forgoing hundreds of millions of dollars per year, and all money which could go into making the system better, which is the real key to getting more people using it.
