Vocabulary

trend – something is popular for s short time

eg: Hipsters aren’t unique, they are just following a trend.

tone it down – say sth. in a less severe way

eg: Don’t just say it’s ugly; tone it down, and say it’s not the most beautiful thing.

severe – very bad, serious, or unpleasant

eg: All the policemen in town are dealing with a severe case.

obscure – 1.  to block something from being seen.    2. something that is really not common.

eg: His face was obscured in the image.    eg: That is a really obscure band, I think nobody has heard of them.

Tone it down formula:

Choose the ADJ.

Example:    disgusting

Find opposite ADJ.           delicious good

+ (a qualifier) very / really/ kinda/ somewhat/ that

=      It’s not really good.  (Direct)   It’s not the best burrito I’ve had. (Indirect)

American Gods.

Evocative – brings out strong emotions

Moody – Usually a darker color scheme, strong shadows and colors, and obscured characters.

Unreliable Narrative – (telling of the story)

Nebulous – it has no structure or shape, it is always changing.

Sub-text – the meaning behind the words that people say, or what they are implying.
