extended family – family that is not your mother, father, brother, sister, grandparents
eg: My cousin’s wedding was the first time I met my extended family.
immediate family – very close family, like mother, father, brother, sister.
eg: Some of my immediate family members are living in Nanjing.
Step – (family member) Father, Mother, Son, Brother…
eg: I have two step-brothers. My mom’s new husband has two sons.
Older or younger sibling (brother or sister)
eg: I have two older sisters.
eg: I have younger and older cousins.
an Only Child
eg: I’m an only child. I don’t have siblings.
Kin – family
eg: Notify his next of kin, that he died in the hospital.
kinship terminology (family words) – the naming system for family members, useful when comparing different cultures
