make it seem like…

an exception to the rule – an instance or situation or person, that doesn’t need to follow the rules

eg: In English grammar, there is always an exception to the rule.

self-explanatory – something that explains itself

eg: What is this coffee cup used for?

Isn’t it self-explanatory? It’s used for coffee.

train of thought – your ideas or words, in order of how you want to say them

eg: Sorry, I lost my train of thought, what was I saying?

lenient – opposite of strict

in my book – my version of the rules

eg: a self-explanatory phrase that means, your version of the rules. He said, “In my book, that’s old enough to drink beer, but you still have to throw it away.”
