hostage – usually a person who is being held or kept by someone, in order for that someone to get what they want

eg: Ransomware holds your device hostage for a payment.

devastating – cause a lot of damage, or be very harmful

eg: Extremist ideas are very devastating.   Some computer viruses can be devastating to your information.

vulnerability – a weak part

eg: The vulnerability was discovered by the US government,but then used by hackers.

unleash – to let something out of someone’s control

eg: They unleashed the power of the virus on some companies, to try and get money from them.

susceptible – easily affected, influenced, or harmed by something

eg: They became susceptible to attacks once they let employees have full access to the servers.
