No, It is not rare, I often watch foreign movies.

grow up – child to adult, about age

eg: I don’t wanna grow up, I wanna be a kid forever.

grow out – for hair to get longer

eg: My hair grew out, and the blond color looked bad.

dye V. N. – use some stuff to change the color of hair or clothes

eg: I dyed my hair blonde in university/ when I was in university.

Grammar

I did blonde hair once before, but I didn’t like it    (Not really good grammar, but it is very common in USA, so it is normal)

I dyed my hair blonde once before…   (much better grammar and vocabulary, BUT, the same meaning)
