Reading

1. Identify a Phrase

Example: A fight to the death

2. Identify if its literal or figurative.

Example: A Literal fight to the death

eg: He had a fight to the death with the ocean.

Example: A Figurative fight to the death.    In the last soccer game of the year the team had a fight to the death to win the tournament. (For Creative Emphasis we use a situation that is similar)

eg: Seniors in High School have a fight to the death to get into college.

3. Context

does it make sense?    He had a fight to the death with the ocean.

Not Really, because the ocean can’t die.

He had a fight to the death with a shark.   (Makes sense, because sharks can die)

4. Partial Phrase – Identify the EASILY changed words.  Nouns, Adjectives.

A fight to (Do something) survive.

A fight to (a place or state of being).  I fight to the front of the line. A fight to the top. A fight to the death.

A race to the moon.

A war to be the president.    A war to win the final (Figurative)

A war to stop slavery.

A war to end all wars.

A dinner to celebrate the holiday.

A way to go home.

Practice: Tell me which one is Figurative and which one is Literal.

Example: If you can’t get a hold of him just try going to his house. (Ambiguous, Not clear, You need to ASK) (Probably the figurative, because it doesn’t make sense to grab someone, unless you are the police)

I tried to call, but I couldn’t get a hold of him. (Clearly only figurative, because you couldn’t literally grab him through the phone)

Example: We need to get a hold of some real talent, then we can make some progress. (Clearly Figurative, because you probably shouldn’t touch the talent.
