Grammar

  • There’s heavy rain.Ā
  • In their fifties (a decade) – when they are 55 (specific)
  • Even (placement in a sentence)

When even refers to a whole clause or sentence, we usually put it in the normal mid position for adverbs, between the subject and the main verb, after the modal verb or first auxiliary verb, or after be as a main verb:

You can take an online course now and you even do the test online.

I havenā€™t even started making dinner.

Itā€™s a really useful book if youā€™re interested in cameras. Thereā€™s even a chapter on buying second-hand ones.

We can put even or not even before the part of the clause or sentence we want to focus on:

Even a five-year-old can see that these figures donā€™t add up.

They came in cars, in lorries, and even an aeroplane.

[talking about a local swimming pool]

Itā€™s not usually too busy. Not even at weekends.

We sometimes put even at the end of a clause or sentence in informal speaking.

She’s used to standing by herself. She can even walk some steps by herself. She can evenĀ walk ahead by herself. I counted once and she could walk four steps.Ā I thinkĀ she has aĀ talent for sports. My wife has beenĀ on leave. Officially, it’s a sick leave, but it isn’t true. I helped her get the paper for sick leave from the hospital. I have a friend who works at aĀ hospital. Even if she has had the maternity leave, she can stillĀ stay at home because of the sick leave certificate. She is okay.
Women can retire when they areĀ 55 years old. Men can retire in their sixties. In European countries the age of retirement is much older. That’s the reason I saw anĀ older couple on the plane when I travelled to Europe. I discovered it was the first time for them to have vacation together by talkingĀ withĀ them. Their hair was completely white. As you know, when a Chinese personĀ is 55 year old, their hair isn’t completely white.
