F2F Class Notes (Shane) – [S]

Vocabulary

CV – Curriculum Vitae (Resume), your work history document.

Lower/Bring Down – (Jiang Di), You were considering lowering your salary expectations to win the job offer.

Warm/kind – You felt that the headhunter was too warm in her conversation when she called you, even though she didn’t know you.

Insignificant – It doesn’t matter, it’s not important.

Around – An estimate for the time

Put up with – do something, even though you don’t like it.  Usually you are being patient and listening, or watching something you don’t want to.

“I put up with my friend because he has a nice car.”

Explain – Tell somebody how something is done

Demonstrate – Show them in a presentation

Grammar

Once I know my schedule – Once I know my time-table for the day.

Higher salary – not “taller” salary

I told… – When you want to tell somebody exactly what you said, make sure you say “I told…” first.

Looked different from – Not “was different with”.  When you are comparing, be sure to use from, not with.  If you use with, you have to say “compared with.”

Need to explain – Not tell.  They want you to explain in detail to them, because you are demonstrating your skills.  If you just tell them that is easier, and it is your action.

Pronunciation

Polite – (Po light).

V – V, not we

Speaking exercise

Original

The headhunter called me in the morning.  She told me if I can meet her if I have time today, so I said we can meet in the afternoon.  But I’m not sure about the time, I will tell you once I know my schedule.  So I finished early, maybe at 4pm, so I asked her can we meet, because her office is near here, so I just walked 5 minutes from this building.  So she asked me some questions about my current job when we met and she had a little surprise about me, because she said I was different with the picture.  Because the picture on my CV is from 2 years ago.  Actually the headhunter, we connected before, maybe 4 months ago.  She has the same brand, looking for a new person, she just called me and asked some questions, then she doesn’t say anything, no message, no phone, I think it’s not polite.  When she connected me this time, actually just because I like this brand, but for the headhunter, I think mmmmmm, you know.  You know when they called you, they talk like she know you a long time ago, but it’s not real you know, she was being very warm.  It’s not real, I don’t like it.  She taught me some rules about the next interview, maybe I will meet HR and then if HR said yes, so I can continue.  And then I will met the VM manager, they will let me do some displays for their brand in their store and I will tell them why I do it same as this, and why I put this bag here, and blah blah.  I will find someone total look for manicans.  I will tell them why I put this coat with this jeans, or this pants, or this shoes together, yeah I should tell them the reason and their headhunter told me you should let them think you are good at your major and you have some good ideas, but the first time you should know more about the brand and things like this.
