Vocabulary

Stuff – Things, a lot of things (like things you would find on your piano).

“There’s a bunch of stuff on it.”

Memorize – Moxie.  To repeat writing/reading something until you remember it without looking at the original.

Nervous – Worried about something that is happening soon.  Something that you care about.

Stressed – When you focus on something and use energy to complete it.

Tall poppy syndrome – Australians don’t like people that stand out.  Usually people that are good at something (except sports).

Grammar

Either/or – Either must come at the beginning of the sentence, or just don’t use it.

I used to, but – You don’t need to say “now I gave up,” because English has tense.

Example: “I used to play the piano when I was young, until I was around 12.  Then I gave up.  Then, when I was 21, I started to play again, but now I don’t play, so I must have given up again.”

Just write my homework, because next week I have my final exam, so I have to review my work the whole weekend.

My homework.  Um, Chinese homework is you have to write a passage and (mo xie) memorize it.  Memorize the final exams …

You mean the subject matter?

Just memorize many things.  And the mathematics homework is you have to complete 8 papers and correct 12 papers and my Physics homework is write 4 papers and English homework is, I don’t remember…  And I have many other courses, so I’m really really, um…  Maybe a month later [it will be holidays].

What will you do in the holidays?

I haven’t decided.  It’s my parents will decide.  Maybe I will go traveling to other countries.  Maybe I stay in Shanghai.  I want to go to Disney Land either, in Shanghai in the summer holidays.

What else will you do in the holidays?

Write my homework.  I have some extra classes.  Maybe Physics, Chemistry, Chinese, Maths and English.

What other subjects do you do at school?

Science, Geography, Biology, Music, Arts, PE, Social Studies (Zhen zhi) and also computer.  I used to play an instrument, now I gave up.  The piano.  It’s like a decoration now.  I put many books on it, also some other stuff.  (There’s a bunch of stuff on it).

Where are you going in Australia?

Adelaide

Why are you going to Adelaide?

Because last summer holiday I went to Adelaide for study, and I also have a friend who is there.  At a different school.  Because Adelaide is boring, so then I can focus on my studies.  I think homework can enrich my life, I don’t think homework is very boring, I like homework.  I want to be a teacher in the future.  A primary school or middle school teacher.  Because teachers have summer holidays and I think it is not so hard to be a teacher, because you always teach the same things.  The teacher only has like two classes every day, and most of the time they just stay in the office with air-conditioner and I think they are very, this job is very comfortable.  And the teachers always said, “oh, I’m too tired,” yeah…  The teacher can find part-time job and the teacher cost is 500 yuan and 2 is 1,000.  And the teacher can teach 4 classes at weekend, so like 4,000 yuan at least.  Because you have many students, especially if you are a school teacher.

Shane: Let’s try to figure out how much a lawyer gets per hour.  My friend is a lawyer and he gets 140,000 CNY / month.  If he worked 40 hours a week, he would work 160 hours per month.  That’s 875 per hour.
